Special Friends Day!
It was a great day in KD as we welcomed our special friends into our classroom. We shared all the great things we have been doing in our growing unit, our classroom routines, our writing and reading skills, Spanish and a peek into the year's events with a movie in the theatre. Thank you to all who attended and helped to make this our students first Special Friends Day extra special.

Goodbye!
The Kindergarten has been working on a goodbye song for the Seniors, a song written by our own Mr. Gardener of the 3rd grade in our Lower School. We will be singing this on Special Friends' Day to our senior buddies- too sweet!
Thank You!
Thank you to Alexandra's mother who came in to read to us this week. We love when our parents come in to visit and guest read!

Signs of spring...
A family of raccoons were discovered on our playground and quickly relocated to the woods. Enjoy this footage that was captured on the playground by our helpful grounds staff. Spring has finally sprung!
Happy Birthday, Scott!
Today was Scott's birthday. He and his dad read a fantastic story about a toothy shark and his tiny nugget sized fish friend. What a great connection to our theme! We also enjoyed a delicious fish shaped, jiggly snack. Thank you, Scott and family, for making Scott's birthday a special day for all of us.
Thank you, Guest Reader
Thanks to Aubree's dad who came in to read to our class. He read a classic, Miss Rumphius. This is a great story to preview our upcoming unit, growing. Thank you for taking the time to come in and share with us.

Lost and Found
These pictures were discovered. In this slideshow the Mighty Buckeyes are working on their sea stars and our class manatee. For the sea stars they were asked to first draw a symmetrical five armed star and then they used a variety of materials to create texture and make their stars realistic. The manatee was created to piggy back on Mr. Cicetti's art lesson, pointillism. We used different shades of gray and white to give our manatee color variation and add realistic details.

Happy Birthday, Nicholas & Sasha!
This month the Mighty Buckeye had no birthday to celebrate so we decided to celebrate our July birthdays. Sasha and Nicholas both read their favorite stories to the class and shared a delicious treat. Thank you to both Nicholas' and Sasha's parents for coming in on these unofficial birthdays. We really appreciate you making the time to come in on these special days to celebrate your child!
Only in Kindergarten, right?

The Y's Guys
Ask me about the Y's guys! One Y is a bandit and steals the long e sound. We can find the bandit at the end of two syllable words. The one wearing glasses is in disguise. He pretends to be the long i sound in one syllable words. And regular Y he starts a word and make the y-y-y- sound like in our Phonics Dance.

Splash in the Ocean
After reading Splash in the Ocean, students began working on creating a new class book to share. Each student chose one ocean animal to draw, outline and paint. These animals will become the characters for their page in our class version. Students also came up with their own version of the text. Thinking about how their animal moves, we kept with the same pattern of the book and came up with silly words too."All the fish are swimming in the ocean, floppy floppy floppy floppy..splash"You are gonna LOVE this one!Friday, February 21, 2014

Happy Presidents' Day!
To honor our former president, Mr. Lincoln, we used different units of measurement to measure how tall Abraham Lincoln was. Using a cartoon drawing done to scale, we found that he was over 600 unifix cubes tall! This was interesting to see how many of our kindergarten friends wanted to measure from the top if his hat rather than his head. We also used our measuring tape to measure using inches and feet. Did you know that he was 6 foot 4 inches?! ( I always thought he may have been taller!)
A Minute to Win it!
This activity allowed your Mighty Buckeye to stretch and flex their fine motor skills and persevere with a challenge for Valentines' Day. Each student needed to nibble down a Twizzler to the correct length of their love arrow, stack five conversation hearts, make two Swedish fish fit into their goldfish bowl and place their M & Ms onto the tiny lined up hearts. It was great!
Thank You, Guest Reader!
Thank you to Ryan's mother for coming in to read to us last week. The Rainbow Fish is one of my favorites!

100th Day Highlights
We also made Fruit Loop necklaces where we counted out 100 fruit loops. Most of us counted 100 using colored groups of 10. This was an excellent strategy to keep track of all those delicious loops!
No 100th day would be complete without taking a look at 100 items. What does that look like? We took the time to share and compare the 100 items each child brought in and talked about why they looked different when they all had 100.
