Ask me about...

After reading. Mousekin's Golden House, we decided to place our class jack O'Lantern in the kinder-garden outside to observe the changes first hand. In the story, the pumpkin begins to decompose, but the author leads us to believe the mouse's house, the pumpkin, is alive! Closing his eyes and changing his expressions. We will be watching to see these changes in our very own pumpkin. With this warm weather...it won't be too long before our pumpkin closes its eyes.

It's Symmetrical!

Mighty Buckeyes worked with pattern block stickers to create symmetrical designs.

Pumpkin Fun!

It all started with a story, How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin by Margaret McNamara. Check out these photos where we...

•  Estimated the number of seeds in our class pumpkin
•  Estimated its circumference
•  Estimated its weight with and without seeds
•  Estimated its height using unifix cubes as our unit of measurement
•  Separated seeds from pulp
•  Counted the number of seeds, by 1's and 10's
•  Recorded our pumpkin data
•  Tallied the number of cups filled
•  Compared our own pumpkins' circumferences and weight
•  Estimated and measured our own pumpkin's height using unifix cubes

Phew!!! We have been busy Buckeyes!!

A REAL LIVE ARCHITECT!!!

On Monday, Mr. Bean came to visit our class to talk to us about being an architect. He shared his designs and the many steps in building. He explained to us the many people involved when building and the many steps that must be followed. He stayed to answer our questions and we were so fortunate to have him. Thank you to our room mother for suggesting he visit. We learned so much!

In Our Lily Pad...

The following applications are available on our iPads when visiting the lily pad during literacy station times. Download them on to your own device!

This app, Phonics Awareness by BUGbrainED, helps the Mighty Buckeyes stretch and blend letter sounds and listen for vowel sounds using silly insects.

This app, Sound it Out, helps to build skills to isolating beginning, middle and ending sounds.

The app, Letter School, when set to the Handwriting Without Tears setting, helps us to practice our handwriting and letter formation in a fun way using animation. Check it out!

Guest Reader

Thank you to Alexandra's mother who came in as our guest reader. She read Leo Lionni's classic, The Biggest House in the World.

Our Star of the Week...Marc!

Marc did an excellent job sharing his pictures and information with his teachers and classmates today. Did you know that Marc is a III ( the third)  of his family? Did you also know that he like to play with a bow and arrow at his grandparent's house? Marc also plays baseball and like to play on his computer. Great job! We learned so much about you today.

Good Fit Books

Today we talked about 'Good Fit' books. Similar to shoes every book has to
fit. Shoes reflect our interests, have a purpose, and fit our feet! The books we chose must be the same, chosen to reflect what we like, for what purpose we are reading it, and fit our reading comfort / skill. Is it too easy? too hard? Today I brought in a collection of shoes with a range of purposes and even one from a Mighty Buckeye’s cubby to explain. I also chose a 'poor fit' Advanced Chess book to show my students that even though I am a good reader looking to learn how to play chess, this book was not a good fit. You should have seen their face when I read a section, but understood nothing!

We had a guest reader, Grant's mother, a visiting author, and a fun Zumba Friday with our Senior Buddies. This week we also began working in new literacy stations including the overhead station, a new handwriting app on our ipads and began our kindergarten dictionaries. Wow! What a great week!
