Thursday, September 12, 2013

This week we rolled out two new stations to add to our Literacy Station times. ABC / Word station is a place where student can build and work with words and phonics. These first two activities help students to build each other's names, practicing our identification of capital and lowercase letters. Students may also chose to use the word wall and sight word rings to build words using magnetic letters.

We also opened the Sensory Tub. Students will feel their way through the popcorn kernels to find items in the tub that start with our /m/ sound and record it on a paper with their best kindergarten spelling.

 more stations to come....

Today we each graphed the contents of our M & M snacks. We sorted and counted each color and recorded it on our graphs. We also recorded the color that had the most and the least. Who knew math could be so delicious!

L'shanah tova!

Today we read a story called Apples and Honey and learned more about the Jewish New Year that begins tonight at sundown. Many students in our class made and shared connections during our story.

9.4.13

Today students were introduced to two games that will be available during our Math Stations. Pick up Sticks and the Plate Balance game allows students to practice developing their own strategies, turn taking, fair play and spatial reasoning skills.

Today we also had a discussion about reporting. Now that we have established our rules for the classroom, (1. Take care of ourselves  2. Take care of each other 3. Take care of our classroom)
we thought it would be great to talk about how we plan to enforce the rules. When do we report to a teacher? When do we handle a situation ourselves? And finally when do we just simply let it go? Going along with Responsive Classroom practices the emphasis is that we need to hear from our students and encourage them to report when a child is physically or emotionally hurt. It is important that we take care of each other and ourselves and make decisions on the behaviors and things we see and experience during the day here at school. We sorted scenarios today in the pocket chart to help us figure it all out.
